AWF Holds its 12th Governing Council in Tunis

Tunis, November 22-23, 2012- The AWF held its 12th Governing Council meeting on November 22-23, in Tunis. This year’s meeting narrowed in on the progress made on the implementation of the AWF Strategy 2012-2016, adopted late 2011, and on AWF’s overall progress and achievements.
Donor Roundtable in Ouagadougou to Support Peri-urban Sanitation Project

The donor roundtable was organized by Ouagadougou’s City Council to mobilize the necessary funds for the construction of the infrastructure needed for this project.
The project was the subject of feasibility studies funded by the African Water Facility, which provided €647,000, covering 88 per cent of the costs of the preparatory work completed in August 2011.

Burkina Faso Becomes a Donor of the African Water Facility

Burkina Faso became a donor of the AWF earlier this year when contributing €80,000 to support the Facility, which it pledged at the Conference on Partnership for Strengthening Water Security in Africa, held in the context of the World Water Forum which took place in Marseille, March 14, 2012.
During a visit to Ouagadougou on November 12, the African Water Facility met with Burkina Faso’s Minister of Finance and Economy, Mr. Lucie Marie Noel Bembamba, to make official the Government’s contribution to the Facility, and to express its appreciation for this generous gesture, also a testimony to AWF’s relevance and effectiveness.
The AWF is also supported by Algeria, Australia, Austria, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Canada, Denmark, the European Commission, France, Norway, Senegal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the African Development Bank.
AWF and NEPAD Launch Preparatory Phase for the Development of the Songwe River Basin

AWF, jointly with New Partnership for Africa’s Development – Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD- IPPF), hosted a meeting to launch the preparatory phase of the Songwe River Basin Development Programme in Kyela, Tanzania, Monday July 16.

Water Engineers Sponsored by AWF Graduate From 2iE Institute

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, July 7, 2012 - A delegation representing AWF took part in the graduation ceremony of students of the International Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE).
Hailing from fragile states and post-conflict countries, a total of 12 graduates sponsored by the AWF, including five women, received a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Water and Environmental Engineering.
AWF Helps Boost Economic Development in Ethiopia and South Sudan Through Water Investments
Tunis, 25 May 2012 – Millions of people living in the Baro-Akobo-Sobat area of the Nile Basin are to benefit from a range of multi-purpose water resources projects to be planned by the Nile Basin Initiative. On May 4, the African Development Bank approved a €2 million grant from the African Water Facility to finance the development study needed to attract the investments required to implement them.
The overall project is supported jointly by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development- Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility.
Sahara and Sahel Observatory Wins King Hassan II World Water Prize
22 March 2012- The Sahara and Sahel Observatory, an AWF grant recipient, wins the King Hassan II Great World Water Prize for its significant contribution to improving the management of trans-boundary groundwater aquifers through a program covering a vast geographic area including North, East and West Africa. The award was presented at the 6th World Water Forum that was held in Marseille in March this year, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Observatory.
