Members
Any member country of the AfDB or others eligible to become an AfDB member country as well as any organization acceptable to the AfDB may become a participant in the AWF Fund.
Participation in the AWF becomes effective after submitting an Instrument of Participation and by accessing to the terms of the Instrument establishing the AWF.
Participation in the AWF is a prerequisite for representation in the AWF Governing Council.
The AWF membership is composed of both, countries and institutions.
The African countries are represented by AMCOW, which signs on their behalf the Instrument of Participation and appoints 5 members of the Governing Council on a sub-regional basis.
The current AWF non-regional Member countries are:

The current AWF Member organizations are:
- European Commission represented by the ACP- EU Water Facility
- AfDB
- African Union
- AMCOW
- NEPAD Secretariat
- UN-Water Africa.
To date, the countries and organisations that have pledged funding to the AWF include the following:
- Canada: has pledged C$ 20 million in total (€13.3 million) for 2005-2010.
- The European Commission: has been innovative in finding new ways to deliver its assistance. In addition to €500 million already programmed under the 9th EDF for ACP countries, the ACP-EU Water Facility was launched in 2004. This Facility, targeting developing countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, is a response to the need to catalyse additional funding and to work directly with those most affected by shortages of water and the absence of sanitation. An amount of €250m for the Facility was approved by the EU Council in 2004, and a further €250m is likely to be approved in 2005. The ACP-EU Water Facility, with the support of the EU Members States, has pledged a total contribution of € 20 million to the African Water Facility for 2008-2009, to build on ownership of African Ministers.
- France has pledged € 12 million for the period 2005-2009 as well as a Technical Assistant.
- Sweden has pledged SEK 120 million (€12.8 million) for the period of 2005-2010.
- Denmark has pledged DKK40 million for the period of 2005-2010.
- Norway has pledged to contribute NOK 90 million (€ 10.3 million) for the period of 2005-2010 as well as a Technical Assistant.
- Austria has committed €400,000 for the period of 2005-2010, and has also contributed to the AWF Communications Strategy in 2006, as well as providing a Technical Assistant.
- Spain has pledged €12 million for the period of 2008-2010.
- UK/DFID has pledged £15 million (€16.2 million) for the period of 2009-2011, as well as a Technical Assistant.
- Algeria is the first regional member country to contribute financially to AWF with an amount of €100,000 in 2008.
- AfDB: up to 2008, the AfDB has contributed in kind as part of its hosting arrangement at an estimated value of €3.8 million.
- Senegal is the second Regional Member Country to contribute financially to AWF with an amount of Euro 200,000.
- Australia: Has contributed €3 millions (5 millions AUD).
