18/10/2006 Niger Basin Authority benefits from AWF supports to collect reliable information on the Niger River Basin
On 18th of October 2006, a delegation of the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) led by Mr. Mohammed BELLO TUGA visited the AWF Director, Mr. Kordjé Bedoumra in Tunis to sign a Grant Agreement for the Niger-HYCOS project of 1,2 million Euro.
The Niger-HYCOS project represents a joint basin-wide hydrological monitoring system that is a necessary basis for NBA and the member countries to perform their water resources planning and development responsibilities.
The Niger-HYCOS project will support socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the Niger River Basin through a direct contribution to improved physical investments in the basin in terms of construction and operation of urgently required water reservoirs for flow control, hydropower development, establishment of flood protection infrastructure, irrigation development, building of ports and facilities for inland river navigation, development of municipal and industrial water supply and sanitation services, and erosion and sediment control interventions.
Moreover, the project will lead to enhanced regional cooperation among the nine riparian countries sharing the river basin by its strengthening of the Niger Basin Authority as a nucleus and driving force of integrated water resources management across national boundaries
22-23/09/2006 AWF supports Monitoring and Evaluation coordination in the African Water Sector
The African Water Facility (AWF) organized a regional consultative meeting in Tunis on September 22-23, under the auspices of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) and in cooperation with the African Development Bank (AfDB), to share experiences and build partnerships to support African countries in the monitoring and evaluation of the water sector.
The meeting, which brought together 85 experts in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) from national, regional and international institutions, was opened by the Algerian Minister of Water Resources, Abdelmalek Sellal. The Congolese Minister of Water Resources and Energy, Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, who is the current AMCOW Central Africa Vice President; and the Uganda Minister of State of Water, Jenipher Namuyangu, also attended and chaired prominent sessions. The Conference was opened by the AfDB Vice-President, Operations, Mrs. Zeinab El-Bakri.
The overall objective of the meeting was to enhance synergy in the water sector M&E through information sharing information, networking and coordinating activities
23/09/2006 AWF signed a Grant Agreement to formulate Burundi IWRM Plan
On the sidelines of the Monitoring and Evaluation coordination meeting, the Director of the AWF, Mr. Kordjé Bedoumra, signed a grant agreement of € 480,000 to facilitate the preparation of Burundi’s Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Plan. The Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat (NBI-SEC) and host institution of The Global Water Partnership (GWP), Mr. Audace Ndayizeye, aced as facilitator of the project at the request of Burundi’s Government. GWP is an international partnership with the mission to support the development of national IWRM plans.
The project seeks to help Burundi achieve a sustainable water resource management regime which will contribute to social equity, economic efficiency and environmental sustainability in the country. This is expected to help improve the health and sanitary conditions of the communities, agriculture, land use and water management as well as reduce the risk of floods and drought.
