Approved Projects

The AWF has a portfolio of 65 projetcs to date at a total value of €77 million:

PROJET 1: AWF supports the formal establishment of the Volta Basin Authority (VBA): The AWF provided its first grant of €165,000 to the Volta Basin Technical Committee (VBTC) through an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulics and Fisheries in Burkina Faso.

PROJECT 2: Formulation of Burundi's Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Plan: AWF supports Burundi through provision of a Grant Agreement of 480,000 to facilitate the formulation of Burundi's IWRM Plan. The Global Water Partnership (GWP) is facilitator of the project at the request of Burundi's Government. GWP is an international partnership with the mission to support the development of national IWRM plans. The objective is for Burundi to achieve a sustainable water resource management regime contributing to social equity, economic efficiency and environmental sustainability in the country.

PROJECT 3: Support to the Development of Water Information and Knowledge Management Systems in Ethiopia: The project is aimed at addressing the water data and information needs of the country to facilitate the planning, implementation, monitoring, sustainable water resources management and development. The project will support Ethiopia to kick-start the establishment of a system of national information management, strengthen existing water quantity and quality data management, reinforce applied research and improved water information ICT infrastructure. The Grant amount is €500,000.

PROJECT 4: Niger-HYCOS Project: The Niger Basin Authority benefited from AWF supports to collect reliable information on the Niger River Basin. The Niger-HYCOS project of 1.2 million Euros represents a joint basin-wide hydrological monitoring system that is a necessary basis for NBA and the member countries to perform their water resources planning and development responsibilities.

PROJECT 5: Kenya Kisumu District Primary Schools Water & Sanitation Project: This NGO implemented project, with the AWF Grant of €228,606 aims at increasing the quality of people's lives by improving their health and reducing the burden to carry water. Communities themselves through a Participatory Integrated Community Development (PICD) approach identified these needs as their priorities. The project's main focus is to change hygiene behaviors of pupils and construct demonstration rainwater harvesting and sanitation facilities in 6 piloting schools in Kisumu (Kenya).

PROJECT 6: Cameroun Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Infrastructures in Rural area Inventory Study: The AWF Grant of 469,486 will support the design and development of a National Programme of water Supply and Sanitation in rural area in roder to achieve the objectives of the RWSSI initiative, create the enabling conditions to attract further investments to support the RWSSI programme and reinforce the legal framework of the Programme Management.

PROJECT 7: Support to the Development of the African Network of Basin Organization (ANBO): The AWF Grant of €439,000 will help to strengthen and consolidate ANBO's institutional capacity and operations, increase the number of basin members of ANBO and develop lasting relations with Basin Organizations, AMCOW, external support agencies, and other partners.

PROJECT 8: GEO-Aquifer Improvement of knowledge and concerted management of North-Wester Sahara Aquifer System (SASS): The AWF and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) signed a Grant Agreement worth €487,800 to finance the GEO-AQUIFER knowledge improvement and the Northern Sahara Aquifer System (SASS) Project. The main objective of the project is to improve the living conditions of the population through the nehancement of knowledge and the sustainable management of transboundary groundwater resources tanks to the use of satellite data, in the perspective of increasing concerted action among Algeria, Libya and Tunisia.

PROJECT 9: Implementation of an integrated project of Water Supply and Sanitation Services for the Urban poor in Kagugube Parish, Central Division, Kampala (Uganda): The AWF Grant of 800,000 supports the establishment of sustainable water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion services tailored to the needs of the urban poor and implemented in the pilot area of Kagugube Parish in Central Division.

PROJECT 10: Zinguichor Master Plan Study-Senegal: The study financed by the AWF for an amount of 935,000, will support the improvement of Sanitation level in different district of Zinguichor, solve the environment issues generated by watsewater management, eradicate the impacts of severe floods created by anarchic rains and finally advocate in favor of new technologies for Water Supply and Sanitation.

PROJECT 11: Preparation of the Mozambique National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme: The study, supported by an AWF Grant of €486,223 is aimed at reviewing the current implementation of rural water supply and sanitation services and recommending improvements through a comprehensive program to meet national and MDG targets.

PROJECT 12: Piloting Rainwater Harvesting Techniques in Rwanda: The AWF Grant of €450,000 aims to introduce the rainwater harvesting techniques in the district of Bugesera, increase soil productivity and improve the agriculture production as well as enhance the availability of drinkable water supply.

PROJECT 13: Support to the Development of an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Plan for Namibia: The AWF Grant of €498,200 will support a project to facilitate the preparation of IWRM plan for a sustainable water resources management in Namibia. The project aims to enable Namibia to achieve the sustainable management of water resource for the purpose of economic development, improved social well-being and protection of the environment.

PROJECT 14: Support for Mapping, Assessment & Management of Transboundary Water Resources in the IGAD Sub-region: The AWF Grant of €1.831.600 will support a project to enable Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) and national water sector planning authorities of its member states to implement and operate an Integrated transboundary water resources mamanegement process. The project aims to enhance regional cooperation and water resource governance capacities to address water related development problems at national and sub-regional level.

PROJECT 15: Lesotho- Development of Rural Water Supply & Sanitation Strategic Investment Plan: The AWF Grant of €400,000 will support the development rural water supply and sanitation strategic investment plan. The goal of the project is to contribute to the increase in the flow of funding to the sector based on improved donor confidence in a solidly founded investment programme in Lesotho. The accelarated rate of implementation will in turn result in improved health and well-being due to improved access to sector facilities by the population of the rural areas, most of whom are poor. The objective of the project is to assist the sector agencies to better manage the operation and development of sector facilities based on sound strategic investment plan and its underlying database and planning model. Consequently, Lesotho will have capacity to manage not only the development of water and sanitation facilities in terms of rehabilitation, expansion and construction of new systems but also to operate existing facilities based on knowledge of their conditions vis-a-vis demands and cost of maintaenance and expansion.

PROJET 16: Roof Catchment Rainwater Harvesting and Management in Uganda: The AWF Grant of €449,830 will support a project to conduct education and sensitization activities that target effective management of the harvested water resource so typically characterized by seasonal scarcity. The system will provide safe water to the households for a longer period beyound the dry spells than has hitherto been the case, and therefore eventually guarantee supply all year round. It will serve as well as alearning ground for management of rainwater harvesting systems that are existing and those to be built and lessons learnt will be replicated in other areas.

PROJECT 17: Project of National IWRM Master Action Plan Formulation in Niger: The AWF Grant of €660,775 will support the IWRM National Action Plan which is in the framework of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and of the health improvement and poverty alleviation policies. Its general objective is to contribute to the socio-economic development through decreasing of individuals without access to sustainable and safe water supply and sanitation, to ensure water resources security to the productive sectors with the active participation of the local population and various partners in the objective of an efficient and sustainable management of water resources. The project's objectives are to formulate, endorse and implement the transition strategies to the IWRM, througha National Action Plan in the perspective of 2025 including finacial resource mobilization to execute Niger's Integrated Water Resource Management Plan, in line with the national background, and the guidelines defined by the Government while respecting international principles in terms of sustainable and environment-rationalized water resource management.

PROJECT 18: Lake Chad Basin Commission-Lake Chad Water Charter Creation and Popularization: The AWF Grant of €890,000 will contribute to enhancing the population's environment and quality of life and to facilitate the implementation of the IWRM 2025 Vision Strategic Action Plan to the Commission of Lake Chad Basin (CBLT). The 2025 Vision is in keeping with the MDGs and the health improvement, povery alleviation and socio-economic development. The legal and institutional framework combined with the political will are an indispensable components for the new integrated rational, equitable and sustainable approach of Lake Basin shared water resource management. Consequently, the creation and implementation of a regulation and legal framework (a Water Charter) appropriate and flexible has been considered. Indeed, the implementation of the water Charter will enable a fair use of water resource among the different countries and users as well as prevention of conflicts related to shared water use. The value added by the AWF funded project is to implement the legal and institutional framework as a central instrument for the CBLT to execute its Strategic Action Plan.

PROJECT 19: International Commission of Congo-Oubangui-Shangha (CICOS)-Project for the improvement of CICOS Capacity Building for Congo Basin Information and Knowledge Management: The AWF Grant of €455,000 will contribute to the sustainable management of the Congo Basin notably through reinforcing CICOS capacity building to collect and manage hydrologic data and information as well as well to enhance Congo Basin water resource knowledge. The project specific targeted objectives are to initiate the implementation of a hydrologic observatory system for the Congo Basin through the rehabilitation of Pilot treatment plants equipped with automatic measurement instruments, to collect data on the socio-economic situation and gender issues affecting Congo Basin riparian countries' population and finally to implement basis for evaluation, inventory and valuation of hydrologic data and information on the Congo Basin.

PROJECT 20: CICOS-Formulation of the IWRM Congo Basin Strategic Action Plan: The AWF Grant of €1.988.673 will contribute to ensure a sustainable management of Congo Basin. The specific objectives are to reinforce the institutional framework of Congo Basin sustainable management as well as main stakeholders' intervention capacities, to provide Congo Basin with an approrpiate sustainable management Action Plan and finally to implement an international partnership for Congo Basin sustainable management.

PROJECT 21: Burkina Faso-Feasibility and design Study of Storm Water Drainage and Solid Waste Management Systems in Ouagadougou: The AWF Grant of €642,000 will contribute to the implementation of public health and hygiene conditions for the underpriviledged social layers of Ouagadougou, and safeguarding of the environment. Infrastructure investments consist of: extension of the city sanitary landfill, closure and removal of all illegal garbage dumps, rehabilitation of the main storm water channel, and upgrading road newtowrks and associated storm water drainage systems.

PROJECT 22: Botswana-Development of Improved Water Control and Management Systems for Pandamatenga agricultural production: The AWF Grant of €1.169.000 aims at improving water control systems on an area of 27,574 hectares to ameliorate water logged conditions, and prepare investment projects for funding.

PROJECT 23: Congo Brazzaville-Support to a Water Supply and Sanitation, study and priority investment project prepration in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire:

The AWF Grant of €1.418.235 aims at carrying out institutional and technical diagnostic and prepare priority works for water supply, sanitation, storm water drainage and solid wastes in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire to meet MDG 2015 and African water Vision 2025 targets.

PROJECT 24: Djibouti-Water Harvesting Project for water supply and agriculture in rural districts of the republic of Djibouti: The AWF Grant of €1.937.000 will aim at piloting innovative run-off water harvesting technologies for drinking water, irrigation and livestock uses in two rural districts.

PROJECT 25: Liberia-Monrovia Expansion and Rehabilitation of the three county capitals water supply and sanitation study: The AWF Grant of €1.520.000 aims at developing plans for the rehabilitation and expansion of water supply and sanitation systems meet 2025 demands in Monrovia and 3 county capitals (Kakata, Zwedru, and Buchaman), including preparation of economically and technically sound priority projects to facilitate the process of mobilising the necessary investments.

PROJECT 26: Mauritania-Formulation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Land Use Plan, Phase 1: The AWF Grant of €500,000 will support the process for the ongoing development of an IWRM and land use plan, and improve capacity for implementation.

PROJECT 27: Mozambique-Integrated Study and Project Preparation for COFAMOSA irrigation project: The AWF Grant of €1.178.367 aims at undertaking feasibility study and project preparation to enable the mobilization of funds for the development of 10,000 hectares of irrigated farmland. Sugar cane has been proposed in the pre-feasibility study as the main crop to be grown in the area to supply cane for sugar/ethanol production.

PROJECT 28: Seychelles-Water Supply Development Plan 2008-2030: The AWF Grant of €955,000 aims at formulating a water supply development plan for three main Islands of Seychelles in order to attract the necessary water project investments to meet demands up to the year 2030.

PROJECT 29: Senegal-Implementation of the Integrated Water Reources Management (IWRM) project for Senegal: The AWF Grant of €1.580.000 will strengthen and activate the DGPRE at national and local levels to pursue the implementation of the IWRM plan to achieve equitable and sustainable development of the Nation's water resources.

PROJECT 30: Chad-Institutional Support for the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Inventory: The AWF Grant of €490,000 aims at undertaking a comprehensive inventory of rural water supply and sanitation (RWSS) facilities in the country to support the updating and implementation of the RWSS programme for Chad.

PROJECT 31: Tanzania-Arusha Strategic Sanitation Plan Preparation: The AWF Grant €654,000 will endow the Arusha Municipal Council (AMC) and its partners involved in the provision of sanitations services with a broad set of strategies and a detailed implementation plan to improve the functioning of services for sanitation, solid waste, storm water drainage, and drinking water supply.

PROJECT 32: Multi-country-Strengthening water and environmental engineering capacity in fragile States: The AWF Grant of €1.990.000 is a support to enable African students to gain access to high quality education at an African based university and water sector centre for excellence.

PROJECT 33: Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC)-Water and Sanitation Initiative: Preparation of investment plan for 15 centers. The AWF Grant of €994,000 aims at identifying an integrated package of interventions for long-term development of water supply and sanitation and environmental management services in 15 high priority secondary towns/centers, including water supply and sanitation improvement, solid waste management, and  drainage improvement in key areas.

PROJECT 34: Central African Republic-Support to a Water Supply and Sanitation Study and priority-The AWF Grant of €1.438.000 will help prepare a programme and define projects which will contribute to the sustainable satisfaction of needs for drinking water and sanitation services for the populations of the 16 districts capitals, including improvements in surface water drainage, solid waste disposal and grey water use.

PROJECT 35: Egypt-Comprehensive Study and Project Preparation for the Rehabilitation of Nubaria and Ismailia Canals: The AWF Grant of €1.900.090 will seek technically feasible and economically and socially viable solutions for efficient water control and system management to reduce water shortages and water-logging in the two canal systems.

PROJECT 36: OMVG-Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Kayanga Geba River Basin: The AWF Grant of €1.585.000 will reinforce the OMVG's institutional capacities to implement sustainable management of shared water resources based on an IWRM approach.

PROJECT 37: South Africa-Integrated Water Harvesting Project in Mpumalanga: The AWF Grant of €374,010 will assist communities in the Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga Province of South Africa to improve output from their communal food gardens through collection and management of surface run-off from precipitation and better management of soil moisture.

PROJECT 38: Morocco-Artificial Recharge of Haouz ground water aquifer: The AWF Grant of €1.892.500 aims at improving water resources management in the Haouz basin through artificial groundwater recharge.

PROJECT 39: Ethiopia-Utilization of Solar and Wind Energy for Rural Water Supply in Ethiopia: The AWF Grant of €1.991.880 will promote and pilot the use of solar and wind energy for water pumping in rural areas of Ethiopia, and initiate development of a long-term investment in these technologies under the Universal Access Programme (UAP) where they are appropriate and most suitable.

PROJECT 40: Liberia-Water Sector reform and Capacity Building Study: The AWF Grant of €1.694.000 will improve the enabling environment in the water sector through implementation of a reform agenda.

PROJECT 41: Burkina Faso-Capacity Building for decentralized Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM): The AWF Grant of €450,000 aims at strengthening the institutional capacity and performance for monitoring and development regulation of water resources and water use in the country to support implementation of Burkina Faso's IWRM Plan.

PROJECT 42: Kenya-Integrated Watershed Management of Kibuon and Tende River basins: The AWF Grant of €1.940.000 will help improve the productivity and sustainability of land use systems and water conservation by empowering local communities and agencies of government to institute improved management of Kibuon and Tende river basins.

PROJECT 43: Togo-Development of an Integrated Water Information System: The AWF Grant of €1.569.000 aims at developing and operationalizing a national water information system.

PROJECT 44: Swaziland-Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project (LUSIP)-Phase II Preliminary Studies: The AWF Grant of 908,911 aims at carrying out the preparatory work necessary for the implementation of LUSIP phase 2.

PROJECT 45: Gabon-Updating of Urban Storm Water Drainage Infrastructure Development Studies in Gue-Gue Lowe-IAI and Terre Nouvelle Basin in Libreville: The AWF Grant of €1.613.000 will contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the populations in 3 key river basins of Libreville by updating of storm-water drainage studies.

PROJECT 46: Multinational-SADC (Southern Africa Development Community)-Support to SADC Regional water Supply and Sanitation Programme:This AWF Grant of €1.997.000 will help establish a regional framework for effective water supply and sanitation planning and management to facilitate SADC member States achieve the Water Supply and Sanitation MDGs by 2015.

PROJECT 47: Central Africa-Institutional Support to the Water Sector: The AWF Grant of 1.961.000 will help Central African Republic (CAR) improve the Framework of water resources management, thereby improving the socio-economic development of CAR. The project will create an enabling environment for investments in the water sector and improve the effectiveness of the water sector.

PROJECT 48: Ghana/TREND-Improved Sanitation and Water Supply Services: The AWF Grant of 1.979.000 will strengthen sector capacity for planning and delivery of pro-poor WASH services in urban areas through tripartite partnerships approaches involving the public, private and NGO sectors and to increase access to water supply and sanitation in the 3 urban pilot areas. The project will identify opportunities for improvements based on recent assessment of the situation within the WASH sector, analysis of the problems and constraints to pro-poor services delivery.

PROJECT 49: Multinational-Regional water Policy of the economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS/CEEAC): The AWF Grant of €1.430.000 will improve water resources management and environment protection by strengthening capacity to plan and implement the Central African water policy.

PROJECT 50: Multinational-Support to the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) for the implementation of the Volta-HYCOS Project: This AWF Grant of €1.200.000 will enable the VBA and the National Hydrologic Services (NHS) of member States to deliver appropriate Hydrological information services to users.

PROJECT 51: Egypt- Master Plan Study for the Rehabilitation/Replacement of major Hydraulic Structures on the Nile: The AWF Grant of 1.364.782 will help develop a Master Plan with 3 main components: i) Sites Investigations and the development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) database and the undertaking of a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA); ii) Safety evaluations and the development of a Decision Support System (DSS); iii) preparation of a capital investment project for a priority major hydraulic structure identified under the study.

PROJECT 52: Zambia-Community Water Management Improvement Project for traditional farmers in Mkushi, Masaiti, and Chingola districts: This AWF Grant of €719,191 will focus on strengthening traditional farmers' ability to efficiently manage on-farm water resources for enhanced productivity and income generation, thus facilitating the transition from subsistence farming to a more efficient and commercially oriented mode of production. In doing so, the project also addresses the issue of vulnerability of smallholder families to climate variability, both reducing their dependency on rain-fed farming and increasing their resilience to climate change.

PROJECT 53: Multinational-Water Operators Partnership (WOP) Peer-to-peer Learning and Benchmarking: The AWF Grant of €490,000 will aim at improving the service quality to customers of African water and sanitation utilities through better financial and technical performance. Financial performance improvement shall aim at increasing operation Cost Coverage Ratio and collection efficiency first while technical performance shall primarily focus on the reduction of water losses.

PROJECT 54: SINEAU-Tunisian National Water Information System: The AWF Grant of €1.973.000 will help finance the setting up of a national water information system in Tunisia called SINEAU (Systeme d'Information National sur l'Eau), which is an integral part of the second phase of an investment programme in the water sector called PISEAU II.

PROJECT 55: Burundi & Rwanda (Multinational)-Integrated Transboundary Water Resources Management of Lakes Rweru, Cyhoha, and Akanyanu: The AWF Grant of €770,000 will help in undertaking i) feasibility studies and detalied design for irrigation development in the Akanyanu marshland and ii) preparation of integrated lake management plans for the Cyhoha and Rweru lakes.

PROJECT 56: Mali-Support to the implementation of an IWRM Action Plan: The AWF Grant of €1.918.500 will allow Mali to put in place an appropriate Framework to improve water knowledge, develop useful tools in order to ensure a better allocation of resources among users, and increase national capacities related to management and exploitation of resources.

PROJECT 57: Malawi-Improving access to water and sanitation for the urban poor in the city of Blantyre: The AWF Grant of €610,790 will help ensure the availability of reliable data and information in the water sector to track the achievement of development targets, policies, programmes and projects, and to facilitate decision-making in planning and managing the sector.

PROJECT 58: Zimbabwe-Chitungwisa Water and Sanitation Project: The AWF Grant of €1.998.000 will finance the rehabilitation of the critical components of the municipal water supply and Sanitation systems and build institutional and community capacity for improved water and sanitation services.

PROJECT 59: Multinational-GICRESAIT: The AWF Grant of €1.228.000 to the Executive Secretariat of the Sahara-Sahel Observatory will finance the Integrated and Concerted Water Resources Management of the Aquifer systems of iullemeden, Taoudeni/Tanezrouft and the Niger River. The objective of the project is to significantly improve the concerted and sustainable management of water resources of transboundary aquifer systems and the Niger River, thereby improving the living conditions and access to water by the 25 millions inhabitants living in the project area.

PROJECT 60: Multinational-Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA): The AWF Grant of €1.272.011 to the African Union Commission will finance the PIDA-Transboundary Water Resources Infrastructure Development Study. The aim of the project is to enable African decision-makers to i) establish a strategic framework for the development of regional and continental Transboundary water resources infrastructure based on a shared development vision, strategic objectives and sector policies; ii) establish a TWR infrastructure investment programme around priorities established by Basin Organizations and Regional Economic Communities (RECs); and iii) prepare an implementation strategy and processes including a Priority Action Plan (PAP).

PROJECT 61: Malawi-Strengthening Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E): The AWF Grant of €1.894.000 to the Governement of Malawi will finance the project: Strengthening Water Sector Monitoring and Evaluation in Malawi. The purpose of this M&E project is to ensure the availability of reliable data and information in the water sector to track the achievement of development targets policies programmes and projects, and to facilitate decision-making in planning and managing the sector. The project aims to strengthen institutional capacity for water sector data and information generation, collection, storage and analysis. A major activity in the project is capacity building in M&E development and management.

PROJECT 62: The Gambia-Support for National Water Sector Reform Project: The AWF grant of €1.988.582 to the Gambia Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, will finance the implementation of the support for national water reform. The proposed project aims at supporting the introduction of a supportive legal and institutional environment for IWRM, developing IWRM strategies, and strengthening and improving data and information systems. This would also facilitate provision of water supply and sanitation at country level in order to achieve the MDGs as well as the African Water Vsion.

PROJECT 63: Monitoring and Evaluation for Water in North Africa (MEWINA) Project: The AWF Grant of €1.912.000 to the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CDARE), will finance the MDGs MEWINA Project. The project's objective is to increase the six North-AMCOW countries capacity in water sector M&E through the set up of a mechanism that allows N-AMCOW to annually report on the status of the water sector, using harmonised and comparable information. This will enbale decision-makers of the North African countries to: i) assess the state of existing water sector M&E system; ii) establish a sub-regional water sector M&E system and mechanism in place which allows North African countries and N-AMCOW to monitor and report on the status of water sector through standardized data and harmonized information; iii) prepare a regional M&E Action Plan and Programme and mobilize adequate resources for its implementation through partnerships.

PROJECT 64: The Songwe River Basin Development Project: The AWF Grant of €3.549.000 to the Governments of Tanzania and Malawi, will support the investment preparation for the Songwe River Basin Development Programme Project. The goal of the project is to contribute to improved living conditions of basin population and socio-economic development in the 2 countries. The specific objectives are to prepare designs and joint investment projects for implementation and create an effective enabling environment for TWRM in the Songwe River Basin.

PROJECT 65: Ghana: Design for Reuse-Harvesting the value of effluent and nutrients for sustaining the operation of sanitation facilities

The AWF grant of €498,000 will finance this project which will introduce a market and end-user oriented planning approach that simultaneously closes the water and nutrient loops called "Design for Reuse" in order to effectively capture the economic value of wastewater and faecal sludge nutrients to help finance, operate and maintain treatment facilities. The project will result in key impacts such as the reduction of the incidence of waterborne diseases, improvement of access to complete sanitation services, and improved operational and financial sustainability of wastewater treatment plants and faecal sludge treatment plants in Ghana.
