Contexte et Origine du Projet :L’économie du Burkina Faso repose sur le secteur agro-sylvo-pastoral qui contribue fortement au PIB national et occupe plus de 90% de la population active. Cependant, ce secteur est soumis régulièrement aux effets de la variabilité et du changement climatique tels que les sécheresses et les inondations qui affectent négativement la performance de l’économie nationale limitant ainsi le développement socio-économique du pays.

ECOWAS The establishment of a regional water observatory

August 2011- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) received a € 411,000 grant for a study to establish a regional water observatory to contribute the improvement of water sector performance.  The observatory would help strengthen political will on common water management policy amongst ECOWAS member countries, and promote the convergence of national policy outlook and strategy framework to facilitate joint action on transboundary water resources management.

Nile Basin Authority support for Niger HYCOS project

October 2006 - The Niger Basin Authority (NBA) received a € 1,2 million grant to collect reliable, quality hydrological data and information on the Niger River Basin for more effective management by NBA and Member Countries of the water resources. This project is particularly important to improve planning and development activities.

Capacity building for decentralized integrated water resources management (IWRM)

April 2008 - The Government of Burkina Faso received a € 450,000 grant to strengthen the Government’s institutional capacity and performance for monitoring water resources and water use in the country and developing adequate regulation for the effective implementation of Burkina Faso's IWRM Plan. The IWRM is part of the Government’s plan to boost water security issues through improved management and development of its water resources.

Feasibility and design study of storm water drainage and solid waste management systems in Ouagadougou

April 2008 - The Government of Burkina Faso received a €642,000 grant to conduct a feasibility study for the improvement of sanitation services in the peripheral areas of Ouagadougou where live the most underprivileged citizens, as a way to improve their health and hygiene conditions, and safeguarding the environment. The project will seek to attract investments to finance the sanitation infrastructure and services proposed.

Combating desertification and climate change in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is the first country to benefit from a climate change focused grant (to the tune of EURO 838,000) by the African Water Facility (AWF), after AWF’s call for proposals launched in September 2014.

Programme Intégré de Développement Agricole et d’Adaptation au Changement Climatique dans Le Bassin Du Niger (Pidaacc/BN) : Etudes Préliminaires des Infrastructures à Buts Multiples

Le fleuve Niger dont le bassin est partagé par neuf (9) États d’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinée, Mali, Niger, Nigeria et Tchad), revêt une importance capitale pour les populations riveraines et les économies des pays membres de l’Autorité du Bassin du Niger (ABN); il remplit de multiples fonctions vitales tant pour l’alimentation en eau que pour le développement de nombreuses activités économiques (agriculture, élevage, sylviculture, pêche, industrie, mines, énergie, navigation, tourisme, artisanat…).

Support for the creation of Volta Basin Authority

March 2006 - The Volta Basin Technical Committee (VBTC) received a €165,000 grant through an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulics and Fisheries in Burkina Faso - for the creation of the Volta Basin Authority. This is the first project ever to be funded by the AWF. It is aimed at establishing an agreement for the creation of the Volta Basin Authority to ensure joint rational and judicious use of the water resources amongst riparian countries, foster transboundary cooperation and benefit sharing.
