Impacting people’s lives

All of the projects the AWF supports have well-defined social impacts at their core. Water is vital to life and an important part of economic growth; AWF projects to date have directly impacted 29 million people across Africa.

Water projects affecting whole nations

A number of AWF projects are impacting entire nations, especially through the support for the design and adoption of national water sector strategies and the integration of water resources management approaches. These initiatives are poised to help countries and regions make better use of the continent’s existing - and at times - untapped water resources, increasing access to water for millions of people along the way.

Typical outcomes for AWF projects

Typical project aims might include:

  • Improving access to potable water and drinking water supply
  • Improving water and sanitation services to reduce the incidence of cholera and other waterborne diseases
  • Combining water, sanitation and low-income housing to improve the living conditions of the urban poor
  • Creating financially sustainable wastewater treatment plants to improve environmental and health conditions
  • Improving storm water drainage to reduce flooding of crops and homes
  • Securing water for agriculture to boost food security
  • Improving downstream ecosystems and human livelihoods
  • Increasing access to water supply and sanitation in fast-growing urban areas
  • Reducing water wastage in existing water systems, thereby improving supply for households and farmers
  • Improving outputs from communal food gardens through collection and management of surface run-off from precipitation and better management of soil moisture
  • Reducing water shortages and water-logging in canal systems
  • Improving drainage in urban centres
