Development of an integrated water information system

January 2009 - The Government of Togo received €1.6 million grant to develop and operationalize a national water information system. This entails improving and intensifying infrastructure providing data and information on water at the Ministry of Water Resources and related organisations, maintaining and upgrading the existing hydrological and climatic observation networks, building the capacity of the staff in water data and information management, and ensuring better water sector information coordination.

Support to the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) for the implementation of the Volta-HYCOS Project

January 2009 – The Volta Basin Authority received a €1.2 million grant to enable the VBA and the National Hydrologic Services (NHS) of member states to deliver reliable hydrological information services to users and perform effective trans-boundary IWRM.

National water sector reform

April 2010 - The Government of Gambia received a €2 million grant to finance the implementation of national water sector reforms. The project aims at supporting the introduction of a supportive legal and institutional environment for integrated water resources management (IWRM), developing IWRM strategies, and strengthening and improving data and information systems. This will also facilitate provision of water supply and sanitation at country level in order to achieve the MDGs as well as the African Water Vision.

Togo-Ghana Trans-boundary Water Supply

December 2013 - Ghana Water LC received a €2.1 million grant to undertake feasibility studies of a public-private partnership for a water transfer project from the Volta in Ghana to Lome in Togo. The study includes an assessment of the environmental and social impact of the project and other technical assessments. The project is expected to provide water to 4 million people.

Support for the development of water information and knowledge systems

October 2006 -The Government of Ethiopia received a €500,000 grant to kick-start the establishment of a national information management system, strengthen existing processes to manage water quantity and quality data, reinforce applied research and improved water information ICT infrastructure. The project is aimed at addressing the water data and information needs of the country to facilitate the planning, implementation, monitoring, sustainable management and development of the country’s water resources.

Niger Basin – multipurpose infrastructure to adapt to climate change

December 2013 – The Niger Basin Authority received a €1.5 million grant to conduct feasibility studies for infrastructure aimed at adapting to climate change. The AWF will also catalyse investments through supporting technical, economic, financial, environmental and social feasibility studies. 137 million people are expected to benefit from this project.

Strengthening the information and knowledge capacity of CICOS for the water resources management of the Congo Basin

May 2007 - The International Commission for the Congo-Ubangi-Sangha Basin (CICOS) received a € 455,000 grant to reinforce its capacity to collect and manage hydrologic data and information as well as well to enhance Congo Basin water resources knowledge.
