Integrated water resources management

April 2012 - The Government of Cape Verde has received a € 1.4 million grant to finance a study that will look at ways to better mobilise and store surface water resources through the construction of dams. The grant will also be used to strengthen the legal framework for integrated water resources management. This will help Cape Verde deal with increased water pressure on the groundwater resources, and build water security for all uses.

July 2009 – The Government of the Central African Republic received a € 2 million grant to establish an institutional and regulatory framework to strengthen water and sanitation sector governance and institutional capacity to attract additional funding and make more sustainable investments. The project is expected to enhance national capacities in the sector in terms of water governance, monitoring, management and planning of water resources.

August 2007 - The Government of Senegal received a €1.6 million grant to strengthen the Direction générale des ressources en eau (DGPRE) at national and local levels to pursue the implementation of the IWRM plan to achieve equitable and sustainable development of the nation's water resources.

November 2007 - The Government of Mauritania received a €500,000 grant to support the process for the ongoing development of an IWRM and land use plan, and improve capacity for implementation. As a result, all stakeholders should have adopted an IWRM approach and have improved capacity for implementing this approach at national and decentralized regional levels. In addition, better temporal and spatial information on water resources and land use will be collected and shared.

November 2009 - The Government of Egypt received a €1.4 million grant to finance a study meant to assess and design improvements of major Egyptian hydraulic facilities and contribute to the implementation of Egypt’s Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan. The IWRM plan aims at improving water distribution and allocation efficiency and reducing the risks of flooding and damage to life and property in case of the failure of hydraulic control structures in the country.

January 2009 - The Government of Liberia received a €1.7 million grant for a study to improve the enabling environment in the water sector through the development and implementation of policy, strategy, institutional reform, and capacity building. It will help formulate consolidated instruments for water sector planning, and reinforce national capacities to undertake the sector reform process.

December 2009 - the Nile Basin Initiative/NELSAP received a € 770,000 grant to reduce poverty and reverse environmental degradation in the Bugesera region, principally in the area surrounding the lakes Cyohoha and Rweru and the Akanyaru marshlands, through the development of Integrated Management and Development Plans for the Rweru and Cyohoha lakes and the Akanyaru marsh.

January 2009 - The Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Gambie (OMVG) received €1.6 million grant to reinforce its capacities to implement sustainable management of shared water resources based on an IWRM approach. This entails building OMVG’s capacities through staff training, the rehabilitation and extension of its hydrological observation network, the establishment of a cooperation framework for the management of water resources. The project will also bring support for the development of irrigation in the basin area located in Guinea-Bissau.

December 2013 – The Government of Niger received €1.2 million to develop its IWRM plan for the entire country in order to improve the use of water resources and promote green and sustainable socio-economic development. The AWF is supporting the preparation of the IWRM plan, including an environmental and social impact and management assessments, as well as helping to ensure the mobilisation of resources for the implementation of the plan.
