African Development Bank Group and African Water Facility at the 9th Africa Water Week

What: Five in-person events on the sidelines of the 9th Africa Water Week and Cairo Water Week 2024.

The African Development Bank Group will host five side events on the margins of the 9th Africa Water Week and Cairo Water Week 2024 with the African Water Facility, European Union, Union for the Mediterranean, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Agence Française de Développement, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and other development partners.

Africa Water Week, an initiative of the African Ministers’ Council on Water, is a platform for knowledge sharing on the provision and management of water, sanitation and hygiene services in Africa. It is hosted biennially by the African Union Commission and the African Development Bank Group.

Cairo Water Week brings together leaders and innovators across the globe to drive action for sustainable water management, through collaboration and knowledge sharing. It is organised annually by the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Agenda

The Regional Launch of the Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative (AUSII) will take place on 14 October from 14.00 – 16.30 GMT+3 in Room ST1-3 at the Triumph Luxury Hotel. 

The event will bring together representatives of governments, the private sector, multilateral organisations, development partners, civil society, and researchers to launch the African Water Facility’s urban sanitation financing window in Africa. Participants will discuss urban sanitation challenges on the continent and AUSII’s role in tackling them.

The African Water Facility Anniversary Event will take place on 14 October 2024 from 18.00 – 19.30 GMT+3 in Vienna Hall of the Triumph Luxury hotel.

The anniversary event will showcase the African Water Facility’s successes over two decades and provide a forum for dialogue involving the Facility’s stakeholders including donors, partners, governments, beneficiaries, and the public.

The Launch of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus Initiative will take place on 15 October 2024 from 8.00 – 10.30 GMT+3 in the Imperia Room of the Triumph Luxury Hotel.

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus Initiative will champion solutions that balance the needs of water, energy, food, as well as the environment in Africa. The launch event will feature a presentation of the initiative’s structure, key objectives and expected outcomes. It will also include a high-level roundtable conversation with government ministers, development finance institutions and the private sector on challenges and solutions around water, energy and food.

One CWIS, One Voice: Joint Statement from Development Finance Institutions will take place on 15 October 2024 from 8.00 – 09.30 GMT+3 in Picasso 1 Room of the Triumph Luxury Hotel.

This event will highlight the accomplishments of the Citywide Inclusive Sanitation working group for development finance institutions that was created In February 2022 to champion activities and progress on implementing this approach to urban sanitation in Africa. Participants are expected to issue a joint communiqué.

The session on Investment Promotion: Ready to Invest Water & Sanitation Projects will be held on 16 October 2024 from 8.00 – 9.30 GMT+3 in Room ST1-4 of the Triumph Luxury Hotel.

The event will present 15 bankable water and sanitation projects that are ready for investment. It will seek to gauge the interest of potential investors and donors and facilitate dialogue with the project sponsors.
