Appraisal Missions

The African Water Facility has concluded a supervision mission in Mali aimed at accelerating the implementation of two climate-resilient water and sanitation projects in Bamako, Kayes region, and Kati Circle. These projects are funded by Denmark and the Nordic Development Fund.

Held from April 7 to 14, 2025, the mission reviewed progress on two key initiatives: the urban project “Projet d’appui à la résilience au changement climatique et à la COVID-19 à Bamako à partir de l’AEP Kabala Phase 3”, and the rural project “Projet d’appui à l’approvisionnement en eau potable et assainissement résilients au changement climatique et à la Covid-19 dans la Région de Kayes et le Cercle de Kati”. The focus was on reallocating resources to speed up delivery, improve project outcomes, and ensure timely completion of activities.

High-level consultations with national partners, field visits, and strategy sessions were undertaken during the mission. The field visits underscored the importance of improved sanitation, particularly in schools and mosques, under the education component of the rural project. These visits also strengthened community engagement. A notable highlight was the visit to two villages, Dialakorobougou and Mountougoula, that will benefit from water and sanitation infrastructure as part of the rural project. This visit led to key discussions and collaboration with local officials.

The efforts made during the supervision mission are pivotal for fast-tracking implementation of both projects, leading to enhanced water and sanitation access and strengthening climate resilience in communities across Mali.
