The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December 2023. The conference convenes global and business leaders, experts, climate scientists, and other stakeholders to address the climate crisis and take decisions to limit global temperature rise, support countries and communities to mitigate, adapt and build resilience to the effect of climate change.

This year, the African Water Facility is heading to the COP where we will contribute to the discussions on water and climate. On 10 December, we will host an event “Water Security for Climate Resilience in Africa” in partnership with the African Development Bank. During this event, we will present approaches to transformative water systems for climate adaptation and strengthening water security for climate resilience in Africa, discuss and highlight financing approaches that contribute to water security and climate action on the continent, and strengthen partnerships for enhancing resilience.

Water is essential to climate action and contributes to adaptation and mitigation efforts. Water also features prominently in the Sustainable Development Goals and plays a central role in systems transitions needed for climate-resilient development.

“As we head to COP 28, our drive as a special fund solely dedicated to helping countries achieve water and sanitation goals is to reinforce the important role of water in climate resilience. The centrality of water to development is clear but even more so, is the sobering knowledge that without water, we cannot survive the climate crisis and countries cannot attain sustainable development. Leaders and Heads of State must recognise the intrinsic role of water, prioritise increased investment in water and sanitation which are central to climate adaptation” says Mtchera Chirwa, African Water Facility coordinator. The African Water Facility will also contribute at the following sessions:
