Background: PRODERER is one of the investment projects considered a priority under the Kagera Basin Development Plan, due to its transboundary importance, its location on the shared Kagera River watercourse, its expected impact on improving water availability, food security through increased agricultural production and energy security, as well as reducing environmental degradation and adapting to climate change. The Government of the Republic of Burundi (GoB) therefore requested NELSAP-CU on August 19, 2022, to mobilize the resources needed to prepare this important project. In this context, NELSAP-CU applied to the African Water Facility on December 15, 2022, 2023, to finance the studies for the project.
Objectives: The long-term objective of the project is to contribute to improving the socio-economic resilience of populations in the project areas by increasing water, food and energy security, leading to improved livelihoods, better health, climate adaptation and resilience, and gender equality.
Beneficiaries: The project's direct beneficiaries are the populations of Cankuzo, Gitega, Karuzi, Muyinga and Ruyigi, considered to be the most vulnerable areas in the east of the country. An estimated 681,546 people, 50% of them women, will benefit from the ultimate development and operationalization of irrigated perimeters, drinking water supply infrastructures and access to electricity, while the interventions to develop production capacities will serve the country's entire population. In addition, the main beneficiaries of capacity-building actions will be MINEAGRIE's technical units and agencies, such as MNHEM and Regideso.
