African Water Facility’s 2023 Funding Dialogue Strengthens Regional and International Commitment to Africa’s Water and Sanitation Sector

The African Water Facility has successfully concluded its second funding dialogue since inception. From 12 to 13 October 2023, the second funding dialogue convened global leaders representing donor and beneficiary governments, multilateral and international organisations, and other stakeholders at the OECD Centre de Conference in Paris to discuss and explore innovative pathways to financing access to safe, secure, and accessible water and sanitation in Africa.

AWF helps build resilience to climate change for millions of pastoralists in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia, The AWF announced on Wednesday, November 19 that it has offered a €3-million grant to the Republic of Somalia to support a project designed to build resilience to climate change and reduce water stress in Somaliland. The project is expected to improve the management of water resources and attract investments to build water infrastructure and improve water services. Around 3.5 million rural and urban people stand to benefit from the project, as well as 2 million nomadic pastoralists.

The African Water Facility and the Nordic Development Fund partner to increase water security and build climate resilience in Africa

Stockholm, Sweden - The African Water Facility (AWF) announced today at the Stockholm World Water Week 2014 its new partnership with the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) as it joins the AWF donor community through a € 6 million funding.  The NDF will also be providing technical support to assist with the management of water projects designed to build resilience to climate change across the African continent.

€1.2 billion in follow-on projects leveraged by the African Water Facility

Tunis, Tunisia - The African Water Facility (AWF), an initiative of the African Ministers' Council on water, has attracted €1.2 billion of follow-on investments for water management projects pledged by donors. “This is a major achievement for AWF's 10th anniversary,” said Akissa Bahri, the Coordinator of the AWF. The announcement was made during the 14th Governing Council Meeting, held from November 28-29, 2014 in Tunis, Tunisia.

African Water Facility Approves €500,000 for the Preparation of an Investment Plan to Support Climate Resilient Socio-Economic Growth in the Lake Chad Basin

The African Water Facility has approved a grant of €500,000 to support the preparation of a five-year investment plan under the Investment Planning for Climate Resilient Socio-Economic Growth in the Lake Chad Basin (PIBALT) project, which aims to catalyse the efficient, sustainable, and equitable use of natural resources in the Lake Chad basin.

Every year on 22nd March, the world celebrates World Water Day, and we examine the realities and complexities surrounding water access. We also promote activities in the use and management of water and make necessary adjustment to deliver universal access to water and sanitation for people and our planet.

First adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, this year’s World Water Day presents an opportunity to review progress in water accessibility and take actions to accelerate change in solving the water and sanitation crisis.

Ghana: A Business Approach for Improved Sanitation – Organic Fertilisers and Energy as Drivers

The project facilitated the development of a business model. Safisana’s circular economy approach is modular and scalable in Sub-Saharan Africa. The efficient recycling concept will join efforts to solve the sanitation problem in Ghana. In addition, the use of compost in agriculture will improve soil fertility and increase yields and ensure sustainable year-round agricultural production, contributing to food security in Ghana.

Announcements: AWF partnership with NDF to build climate resilience and call for proposals of water-climate projects

On 2 September, at the Stockholm World Water Week 2014, the AWF announced its new partnership with the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) as it became the 16th donor to join the AWF donor community following a € 6 million contribution.

Through this partnership, the AWF will be able to benefit from NDF’s vast experience in dealing with climate change, while the NDF will be able to expand its activities in Africa through AWF projects to help boost the development of the water sector.
